How Do You Know If You Have BVD?

Binocular vision dysfunction or BVD is a visual condition that results from both eyes failing to coordinate properly. It makes the line of sight slightly misaligned from one eye to the other. The eye misalignment stresses the eye muscles as they attempt to correct the issue to achieve a single, focused vision.

Diagnosing BVD can be complicated, and many people experience uncomfortable symptoms for many years before getting a correct diagnosis. So, how do you know if you have BVD?

Dizziness, Light-headedness, and Motion Sickness

Different symptoms can indicate that you have BVD. Trying to correct the misalignment causes the eye muscles to strain. This can lead to complications that include dizziness, light-headedness, nausea, and motion sickness.

Many people experience disorientation, difficulty walking straight, and migraines. The intensity and frequency of these symptoms vary. Moving the head up and down or side to side, driving, and standing up quickly can trigger the condition. Being in large spaces that have high ceilings can also be a trigger.

Reading and Difficulty Learning

An indication that a person may have BVD is difficulty reading and learning. Some doctors have misdiagnosed children with ADHD and other learning disabilities, yet they actually have BVD. BVD can cause an individual to feel tired while reading, and words to blend together, making it difficult to concentrate.

Patients report experiencing words swimming or moving on the page. Eye Doctors can miss these misalignments during routine eye examinations. Neurovisual evaluations help detect very subtle or small eye misalignment.

Disturbed Sleep Patterns

If you have been experiencing problems with your sleep patterns, it could be due to BVD. Misaligned eyes strain the eye muscles. You may be unable to get a good night’s sleep because the eye movements cause dizziness and disorientation. You may also find that you require total darkness before you fall asleep, as any light can lead to visual vertigo.

Experiencing Double Vision

Double vision is a common symptom for different eye conditions. If nausea and dizziness come together with shadowed or double vision, it could be a sign that you have BVD. You may also experience extreme light sensitivity from seeing glare from different surfaces.

If you are often uncoordinated or clumsy, with poor hand-eye coordination, it could be due to BVD. If you need to close or cover one eye to improve visual tasks, you may have BVD.

Head, Neck, and Shoulder Pain

Other symptoms of BVD include pain in the head, neck, and shoulders. If you experience headaches in the forehead or base of the skull or throbbing temples, it could be due to BVD. Some people experience intense pressure on the head.

The constant intense headaches often come with pain in the neck and shoulders from tilting the head. If you or someone you know suffers from any of these symptoms, get relief now and take our Free 5 Minute Self Test to find out if you have BVD here.
